F-35 secrets at risk as U.S. shipment to Hong Kong diverts
The U.S. Congress has launched an investigation after an unexpected diversion of a shipment of F-35 aircraft parts. The parts were sent from Australia to the United States for maintenance but unusually redirected toward Hong Kong, a territory controlled by China. The shipment includes sensitive components, such as a cockpit canopy with classified technology, and it is believed that this diversion could threaten the security of the aircraft and American defense system components, especially amid concerns that these parts might fall into Chinese authorities’ hands. The U.S. Department of Defense and Lockheed Martin have confirmed that there was a flaw in the transfer process, and efforts are underway to recover the parts and ensure that future transfers are conducted with maximum security. This incident is seen as part of a broader issue involving the loss of over a million F-35 spare parts over the past five years, with the full extent of the losses not yet reviewed due to the company's control over information.
