The decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to freeze sanctions imposed on Russia before their implementation has sparked criticism from both Ukraine and the United States. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that this decision encourages Moscow to continue its attacks on Ukraine, considering that it will not halt the war but rather boost Russia’s desire to escalate, especially with Moscow’s ongoing bombing of Ukrainian energy generation and transmission targets. On the other hand, the Russian envoy described this exemption as a historic moment, pointing out that sanctions could have hampered economic cooperation between the United States and Russia. Trump issued an executive order that exempts Russia from several sanctions and tariff restrictions on oil and gas, justifying it as serving American national interests. The U.S. Secretary of State stated that this measure provides a 60-day window to assess the impact of sanctions on the global economy, amid sharp criticism from both political parties regarding Trump’s order and his dealings with Moscow, particularly as energy prices are affected by the U.S. war on Iran and Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia.
