Nigeria Sees 37 Mysterious Detention Deaths
Thirty-seven people who were being held on suspicion of engaging in illegal mining in Niger State, Nigeria, were killed, likely due to the conditions of their detention, which may have contributed to their deaths. It is believed that overcrowding and poor ventilation led to their fatalities. Authorities have opened an investigation into the causes and have suspended the head of the security and civil defense agency. The deaths occurred while the detainees were in custody with Civil Defense forces in Minna, following raids on illegal gold mining sites. The incident sparked protests and public outrage, with clashes and demonstrations involving security forces firing tear gas and gunfire. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
