Australia, Canada, France, and UK lament Palestinian election delay
The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom expressed their deep regret over the decision by the Palestinian president to postpone the Legislative and Presidential elections until September 2027. They noted that this delay deprives a generation of Palestinians of the chance to vote and erodes confidence in democratic institutions. They pointed out that the postponement resulted from significant challenges, but reaffirmed the importance of elections as a source of legitimacy and reform, and their role in laying the foundations for the State of Palestine and a two-state solution. They called on the Palestinian Authority to reconsider the decision and to proceed with holding elections without delay, emphasizing that Hamas's participation in future Palestinian governance is impossible.
