Brazil probes Amazon fires for possible arson
Brazilian authorities are investigating the wildfires in the Amazon that have been ongoing for weeks, suspected to be the result of deliberate criminal acts aimed at destroying the forests and illegally seizing land, with possible links to the presidential elections. Authorities have recorded hundreds of fires in areas outside agricultural land, and between October 1 and 14, the number of fire hotspots in Amazonas state reached 1,608, compared to 874 during the same period last year. The situation is increasingly challenging due to the El Niño phenomenon, which has intensified droughts and caused higher temperatures. The dense smoke from the fires has deteriorated air quality and led to the closure of schools in the state's capital, Manaus.
