Spanish King and wife in Ceuta
King Felipe VI of Spain visited the city of Ceuta, a rare and diplomatically sensitive move, more than two decades after his father’s last visit in 2007. The visit comes less than seven weeks before the early parliamentary elections scheduled for November 29, with the issue of migration being a key topic in the election campaign. After more than 70,000 migrants arrived in late July, the city, which has a population of around 80,000, has been attempting to restore its normal life amid the anger of residents who felt abandoned by the Spanish government. The visit coincided with intensified discussions about managing the migration crisis and its impact on the government’s stance and local conditions.
