European water levels at risk from heat and dryness
Europe is experiencing a severe and ongoing drought following a hot summer and a dry autumn, as river and lake regions have not recovered from the water level decline that began during the scorching summer. Lake Bodensee, the largest inland lake in Germany, is among the heavily affected areas, with its water level being 89 centimeters below the normal October level. The drought situation there is classified as level four (high risk). The Rhine River, a major waterway, is a significant concern; it suffers from repeated low water levels, leading to the suspension of many inland shipping routes and reduced cargo capacity for vessels, with warnings of potential impacts on energy supplies and the economy. Experts stress the urgent need for a fundamental overhaul of water resource management policies to preserve water, especially as rising temperatures and climate fluctuations are expected to intensify the long-term water crisis.
