International hotels eye Syria tourism revival
Global and regional hotel companies are striving to enter the Syrian market or expand their investments, betting on the country's historical and coastal assets despite security challenges and underdeveloped infrastructure. French company Accor is engaged in advanced negotiations for two projects, while Windham is exploring opportunities in Damascus and along the coastal destinations. Meanwhile, Minor Hotels is considering converting historic buildings into small hotels. Syria experienced significant growth in the number of visitors during the first half of 2026, with over 3.52 million visitors, mostly Syrians residing abroad. This reflects the tourism sector’s greater reliance on visits from expatriates rather than traditional international tourism. The tourism industry faces security threats, infrastructure difficulties, restrictions on electronic payments, and risks stemming from the ongoing war. Additionally, an estimated rebuilding cost of around $216 billion is needed to develop the tourism sector effectively.
