Has the longest international break succeeded
The British BBC network's report discusses the results of FIFA's long international break experiment conducted in September and October 2026. The break lasted three weeks instead of two, aimed at reducing travel burdens and improving players' conditions during a season full of challenges. Although the goal was to decrease injuries and enhance team cohesion, the experiment led to an increase in injuries, particularly muscular ones, with some players being sidelined before matches due to injuries, and some national teams or clubs taking advantage of the break to make changes. Coaches and officials also noted that the extended pause disrupts the rhythm of competitions and frustrates fans. Meanwhile, lower-division clubs and women's leagues seized the opportunity to boost broadcast audience and financial support. The overall impact of this final approach is still being evaluated as part of ongoing assessments of its effects on the season.
