Iraqi courts hear 5700 detainees including children
The article discusses the trials of approximately 5,700 people, including 157 children, in Iraq on charges related to the Islamic State, after their transfer from detention centers and camps in Syria. Amnesty International warns that these mass trials could lead to unfair verdicts, including death sentences, especially if based on confessions extracted through torture or mistreatment. The organization emphasizes the importance of establishing individual responsibility for each defendant, addressing children's rights according to international standards, and urges avoiding the prosecution of children for acts committed before the age of 18 except in serious crimes, while ensuring justice and transparency. Iraq is experiencing a rise in executions, with its courts issuing over 200 death sentences in 2024, and approximately 63 executions carried out so far—more than double the number in previous years.
