Turkey delays sociologist Binnaz Toprak's trial
The Istanbul court has postponed the trial of French-Turkish sociologist Pınar Selek for the eighth time, this time in absentia, on terrorism charges, despite her having been acquitted four times previously. Selek, who was detained in 1998 and faced charges following investigations related to a blast at a market in Istanbul, left Turkey for exile in 2009 due to threats she received after publishing a book about military service. The Turkish judiciary issued an order in 2022 to prosecute her again, leading to lengthy delays in court sessions amidst international criticism, with many describing the case as politically motivated.
