Japan Deploys Robots to Confront Bears
The article addresses the worsening problem of increasing encounters between humans and bears in Japan, where bear attacks have reached a record high, resulting in 13 deaths and over 220 injuries between April 2025 and March 2026, compared to 3 deaths and 82 injuries in the previous year. The rise is attributed to the shrinking of agricultural areas, which has driven bears closer to residential zones, especially as their natural food sources decline and climate change delays the ripening of the fruits they rely on. Japanese authorities are employing advanced techniques such as AI-connected cameras and drones to monitor bear movements and alert residents, in addition to robots that mimic wolf howls to frighten and deter them. Responses sometimes include shooting bears when they pose an immediate threat. Studies confirm that this technology is effective, achieving up to 91% deterrence rates using drones in some U.S. states; however, human intervention using trained dogs, such as Finnish Karelian dogs, remains effective in reducing direct confrontations. Ultimately, Japan aims to strike a balance between deploying technology and using non-lethal intervention methods to ensure the safety of residents while conserving bear populations.
