US court sentences ex-Sednaya director to 60 years
A federal court in the United States has sentenced a Syrian man to 60 years in prison. He was the director of Adra Prison in Damascus between 2005 and 2008, and was convicted of using torture against prisoners and committing crimes related to human rights, including silencing political opponents. The sentence was imposed after testimonies from victims of torture and mistreatment. The court also convicted the individual, who arrived in America in 2020, applied for citizenship in 2023, and was detained in July 2024 for lying to authorities about his past. This ruling affirms that perpetrators of human rights violations will not be safe in the United States and will be pursued and punished for their crimes.
