Smart chip restores vision in eye atrophy patient

Science Corporation successfully implanted the PRIMA chip into the first patient suffering from Stargardt disease, a hereditary condition that causes gradual death of the light-sensitive cells in the retina, leading to a blind spot that widens over time. This results in vision loss for approximately 150,000 people worldwide. The chip allows the patient to see a small black-and-white spot and recognize some letters, following a one-hour procedure involving glasses equipped with a camera that transmits information to the chip, which functions as an artificial photoreceptor. Future development aims to expand the field of vision and enhance detail recognition, with improvements in vision expected within five years, and the possibility of restoring some vision in individuals with other genetic diseases.
