Pope Leo XIV is associated with several sports and teams. He is passionate about tennis and is a graduate of Villanova University, whose basketball team he supports. He also roots for the Chicago White Sox in baseball, the U.S. national team, and Real Madrid; his name has also been linked to support for clubs in Rome. He welcomed the Villanova and Notre Dame basketball teams to the Vatican for an event attended by around 7,000 people. The Pope sees sport as a school of fraternity and solidarity, and warns against a win-at-all-costs mentality and the doping, match-fixing, and corruption it can lead to.
