Vatican aids Ukrainians amid Kremlin response
Pope Francis, during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, requested a ceasefire in the besieged Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which is caught between Russian and Ukrainian forces. The aim is to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the safe evacuation of civilians. The Holy See confirmed that the Pope expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation there, calling for a truce that ensures the delivery of food and medicine and enhances civilian safety. Moscow, for its part, expressed support for the humanitarian initiative and affirmed its readiness to cooperate. Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine are exchanging accusations of hindering aid deliveries, as Ukraine continues efforts to regain control of the city.
