Shehbaz declares emergency in Imran Khan's region
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the imposition of a state of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an area governed by the Insaf Movement led by Imran Khan, in response to worsening security conditions and terrorist threats. This decision came simultaneously with a protest march led by Khan's supporters demanding his release, where the regional leader, Sulaim Afridi, rejected the move, deeming it illegal, and warned of a popular backlash against the emergency rule. This step is seen as part of a political confrontation between the central government and Khan's party, with concerns that emergency measures could be used to restrict protests and diminish the electoral authority of the regional government.
