Expert Warns Turkey's S-400 Exit a Strategic Error

The news discusses Turkey's stance regarding the Russian "S-400" missile systems. Ankara considers transferring these systems outside its territory without its approval to be a highly sensitive decision that threatens its relations with Moscow and constitutes a major strategic mistake. Russia believes that any transfer of the systems requires its approval, and Turkey has not requested such a transfer yet. Turkey is also working on developing its own air defense systems, but the "S-400" systems remain vital to Turkey's defense capabilities amid regional tensions. Additionally, Turkey purchased these systems from Russia in 2017 and refused US demands to relinquish them in favor of Patriot missile systems, which led to Turkey being excluded from the F-35 program and facing sanctions. A Kremlin spokesperson confirmed that the issue of transferring the systems is still under discussion with Ankara, and considers any transfer without Moscow’s approval to be a grave mistake. It’s also noted that Turkey is now contemplating selling the systems to Gulf countries as a way to ease tensions with Washington, and that the military is gaining enhanced capabilities to confront new threats.
