OpenAI has revealed efforts by Iran and Russia to use artificial intelligence to create influence operations, exploiting fake journalistic identities and research organizations with independent-looking fronts. The Iranian operation relies on creating seven fake journalist personalities that have published nearly 100 articles since July 2025, aimed at shaping public opinion on geopolitical issues, especially the US-Iran war, through small and medium-sized online media outlets. Meanwhile, the Russian operation involved a research center in Latin America, where real employees were exploited to carry out activities aimed at undermining Ukraine's image and influencing local policies, all without their knowledge of being connected to a Russian entity. The company indicated that the evidence points to the use of AI tools to create identities and coordinate complex propaganda campaigns, many of which have been thwarted over the past two and a half years.
