Syrian General in Lebanon Under FBI Shield

An investigative report has revealed that a former Syrian general, wanted for crimes against humanity and listed on the U.S. sanctions list, is receiving funding and protection from American and Lebanese authorities. His name is Bassam Hassan, who oversaw the Syrian chemical weapons program and served as a high-level advisor to President Bashar al-Assad. He has been residing in Lebanon since the collapse of the Assad regime in 2024 under arrangements that allow him to stay there in exchange for providing information about the kidnapping of American journalist Austin Tice in Syria in 2012. Reports indicate that Hassan was involved in the kidnapping operation and provided intelligence to U.S. intelligence agencies, despite the Syrian government demanding his prosecution. It is believed that he continues to receive payments for his cooperation, while the case of Tice remains unresolved with no significant progress in the investigation.
