Trainee doctors in Germany face harassment and discrimination

An investigative report revealed that 13% of approximately 9,000 male and female doctors reported experiencing sexual harassment over the past year, and 49% faced abuse of power such as bullying and insults. Most of these cases (87%) were perpetrated by male supervisors, which is considered a structural problem resulting from the strict hierarchy within German hospitals. Senior doctors dominate training and professional development, and male dominance in surgical fields is exacerbated despite 70% of medical students being female. Experts have called for the establishment of regulations to organize doctors' training and to reduce the authority of senior doctors, aiming to decrease incidents of discrimination and abuse.
