German trainee doctors face harassment and discrimination

An investigative report has revealed that 13% of approximately 9,000 doctors in Germany reported experiencing sexual harassment over the past twelve months, while 49% confirmed being subjected to abuse of power such as bullying, harassment, and insults. The majority of offenders were male supervisors, due to a structural problem related to the strict hierarchical system in German hospitals, where senior doctors dominate training and professional development opportunities. Female medical students make up about 70% of all medical students, yet men dominate surgical specialties, and cases of sexual harassment against women in these fields have been reported. The Medical Union proposes implementing mandatory curricula to reduce the authority of senior doctors, amid disagreements among regional branches regarding the implementation of these reforms.
