Spain plans general strike before elections

Major labor unions in Spain have called for a nationwide strike on November 11th to protest the rising housing and rental costs, which have become a heavy burden on citizens. This comes amid growing protests over the housing crisis, which worsened after the eviction of an elderly woman in Madrid, who later died, sparking widespread public outrage. The government is under political pressure following its failure to pass two government decrees related to renewing rental contracts and restricting evictions of vulnerable tenants, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and a call for early elections on November 29th. The crisis has caused rental prices to double over the past decade, with home prices increasing by approximately 90%. Inflation rose to 4.9% in September, the highest level since the beginning of 2023. The government has attempted to mitigate the crisis through measures such as capping gas prices and offering fuel discounts, but the issue remains an increasingly urgent political priority ahead of the elections.
