PHP flaws disrupt UK government services

An announcement has been made that 32 government services in the United Kingdom have been temporarily halted, and four others partially disabled, due to addressing security vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language. PHP is widely used in websites, and this poses a threat to the security of most digital platforms. Officials clarified that these outages were precautionary measures taken while implementing essential security updates to fix the two serious vulnerabilities known as PHP2Shell, which could allow attackers to execute remote code on servers. Affected platforms include content management systems like WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. Updating PHP is the safest solution to prevent exploitation of these vulnerabilities. While additional security measures are important, they do not replace the need for installing security updates. Experts warn that issues in PHP can impact a variety of websites—even those without separate security software—and emphasize the importance of quickly updating software to ensure digital security.
