Fuel crisis triggers forest conflicts

The article explains that Lebanon's fuel crisis is worsening the suffering of the population, especially with the rising prices of fuel oil, which have reached around $1,500 per ton, and the increasing costs of firewood, ranging between $250 and $350 per ton. As expenses continue to escalate, many families resort to illegally cutting down trees, particularly ancient Lebanese cedar trees, which threatens the environmental wealth and leads to the destruction of forests and the deterioration of ecological balance. Cutting trees is a violation of the forestry law and requires prior approval, but enforcement of these regulations is hampered by limited resources. The crisis is linked to the depletion of natural resources and poses a danger to the environment, amid ongoing rising costs and the lack of effective economic alternatives for heating.
