A family in Southern California has been awarded $13.5 million in a wrongful death lawsuit after their son, Richard Matus Jr., died of a fentanyl overdose while in custody at Cois M. Byrd Detention Center. The federal jury found that Riverside County and the Sheriff’s Department failed to respond appropriately when Matus, awaiting trial on attempted murder charges, overdosed after drinking homemade alcohol laced with fentanyl. Although the family received a portion of the damages, the jury deemed Matus 60% responsible for his own death.
