CNN’s Decision Desk projects that Democrat Abdulrahman al-Sayed will defeat Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race, keeping the seat held by retiring Senator Gary Peters in Democratic hands. The victory comes after al-Sayed faced a close primary against moderate Representative Haley Stevens, who endorsed Rogers in the final days of the campaign. If al-Sayed is sworn in in January, he will become the first Muslim senator in the United States.
