Egypt maintains opposition to Libya maritime deal
Egypt firmly rejects the approval of the 2019 Memorandum of Understanding that delineates the maritime borders between Libya and Turkey, considering it illegal. This stance comes within the context of a years-long dispute over sovereignty rights and resource exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean. This was stated during talks in Istanbul between Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, where Shoukry emphasized the importance of respecting international law of the sea, particularly the United Nations Convention of 1982. He also reaffirmed Egypt's support for the unity and stability of Libya. It is worth noting that the Libyan-Turkish agreement dates back to 2019 and has faced opposition from the Government of Eastern Libya led by Khalifa Haftar, as well as rejection from Greece and Cyprus, which regard it as an infringement on their territorial claims in the region.
