Trump Aims for Deal as Putin Celebrates Ukraine Gains
The article summarizes the stance of Russia and the United States regarding efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin is betting that Donald Trump's desire to resolve the conflict and achieve economic gains will allow Moscow to extract concessions from Washington, rather than retreat from its objectives in Ukraine. During a meeting in Saint Petersburg with an American official, Putin presented peace proposals that included economic incentives, while Moscow remains committed to its core demands, such as control over the Donbas region and security guarantees. In contrast, Trump has taken steps that favor Russia, including lifting sanctions on diesel exports, proposing a halt in the energy sector, and calling for a change in Ukrainian leadership. This reflects differing calculations between the two sides and complicates the peace efforts.
