Why did Iraqis oppose the Zaydi ministers' oath
A video clip released by the Iraqi government sparked widespread controversy regarding the oath of honor taken by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi and his cabinet ministers after the formation of the government. The oath included commitments to uphold the constitution, protect citizens' interests, avoid abusing power, and emphasized renouncing party and sectarian loyalties. However, the video showed protocol violations, with the most notable breaches occurring during the oath-taking on the Holy Quran, which offended social media users. It was observed that some officials placed their hands on a blank sheet of paper or merely pointed with their finger. Reactions among commentators varied: some stressed the importance and reverence of the oath as a solemn responsibility, while others called for its abolition, arguing that integrity is not guaranteed by slogans and rituals alone. They emphasized that strict accountability for those misusing public funds is the true solution to safeguarding people's rights.
