Chinese scientists create lightweight wireless microscope
Chinese scientists have developed a wireless mesoscale microscope device weighing just one gram, capable of accurately monitoring neuronal activity down to the single-cell level in the brains of mice within natural environments. The device is called "Airscope," and it was created using advanced techniques that allow recording the activity of more than 8,500 neurons simultaneously across 14 regions of the brain cortex, with a resolution of 4-6 micrometers over a field of view spanning 6 millimeters. Tests showed that mice could move freely while wearing the device, and the quality of the neural signals captured is comparable to traditional microscopes. This allows for broader and more precise monitoring of brain activity during natural behaviors. This breakthrough deepens our understanding of brain functions and enhances applications in brain-computer interfaces, with potential expansion into fields like oncology and immunology.
