Libyan Parliament Reinstates Ties with Turkey
Libya announced the signing of a maritime boundary agreement with Turkey, which was signed on November 27, 2019. The ratification process was delayed for 12 years during the presidency of Aguila Saleh of the House of Representatives. The agreement aims to define maritime zones in the Mediterranean Sea, exceeding traditional maritime boundaries and going beyond Greek islands, with the purpose of securing rights for oil and gas exploration. The agreement faced widespread criticism from Egypt, Greece, and Cyprus, who considered it illegal and an infringement on the rights of the islands. Additionally, the European Union objected, claiming that it harms the interests of other countries and heightens tensions in the region.
