UN warns of Afghanistan crisis
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that more than one-third of Afghanistan's population, approximately 19.2 million people, are at risk of severe food insecurity by April 2027. The number of those affected is expected to double during the dry season from November to April, with some 5 million potentially requiring emergency intervention to address hunger levels. Currently, 15.9 million people are experiencing food insecurity at the "crisis" level or worse, as food services have deteriorated due to the closure or reduction of nutrition centers resulting from budget cuts, alongside the impacts of climate disasters, conflicts, and forced displacement. Reports indicate that more than 4 million children between 6 months and 5 years old could suffer from severe malnutrition next year, reflecting a food crisis that will impact families' ability to provide adequate nutrition.
