Astronomers Spot Green Star
Astronomers have successfully observed a unique white dwarf star that has turned a faint yellow-green color after consuming a rocky debris from planets that previously orbited it. This star, named "WDJ1330+6435," is located approximately 280 light-years away in the Milky Way galaxy. It appears green due to chemical changes in its outer layers caused by interactions between atoms—especially sodium—under extremely high densities, which lead to shifts in atomic energy levels. This discovery provides new insights into the color variations of white dwarfs, which are typically white. The study revealed that the chemical composition of their outer layers determines their color, involving changes resulting from interactions with other surrounding elements. Scientists rely on this finding to gain a deeper understanding of the properties and evolution of white dwarfs, emphasizing that their colors can vary depending on their chemical makeup, even though most appear white.
