Alberta independence referendum tests Canadian unity
The article highlights a referendum in Alberta, Canada, where voters are asked to choose whether they want to start the process of secession from Canada. The referendum aims to gauge support for independence in the province, which is rich in oil. Polls indicate that less than 25% of the population supports this, but independence supporters believe the results are not conclusive. This referendum poses a challenge to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who opposes secession and emphasizes that Alberta's oil resources are vital for strengthening Canada's economy and reducing dependence on the United States. He also stresses that national unity is important for advancing projects such as exporting oil to Asia.
