Lebanon: Amnesty Approved by Court
The interpretation of the general amnesty law in Lebanon by the Constitutional Council led to the suspension of the prisoners' ongoing hunger strike and opened the door for the law's implementation, which is expected to result in the release of more than a thousand prisoners in the initial phase within two weeks. Coordination has been established between the judiciary and the prison administration to expedite the release procedures for those eligible, with clear mechanisms set to ensure the fair application of the amnesty. Meanwhile, the Constitutional Council's clarifications have begun to specify the scope of exceptions, including crimes of corruption, wars, and crimes against humanity. This has led to widespread acceptance of the decision and the end of the hunger strike, although some movements continue to demand the release of other individuals.
