London's refugee policies intensify crisis
The article discusses Britain's policy response to the crisis of irregular migration via migrant boats across the English Channel. It details the suspension of the agreement with France, which previously allowed the repatriation of some asylum seekers, leading to an increase in crossing attempts that reached 1,739 individuals in one week last October, despite a decrease compared to the previous year. Data indicates that the number of asylum seekers in Britain reached approximately 85,891 during the year up to June 2026, with a high proportion arriving by boat. Human rights organizations and studies criticize current policies, pointing out that increased surveillance and security measures make the journeys more dangerous, exposing migrants to violence and fatalities. The International Organization for Migration has recorded 225 deaths since 2018 during crossing attempts. Experts believe that British and European policies focused on fortress-like borders do not stop migration but rather push migrants toward more perilous routes. They advocate for opening safe legal pathways to protect migrants and reduce the associated risks.
