Azerbaijan protests rise over hijab ban
Protests are escalating in Azerbaijan in response to the ban on female students and teachers from entering schools due to wearing the hijab, amidst amendments approved by the Cabinet to strengthen the secular nature of education. The schools are witnessing moving scenes of protestors crying and refusing to have their religious rights curtailed, amid calls to ensure the freedom to wear the hijab without being deprived of education. This controversy comes after a decree was issued requiring a uniform dress code in educational institutions, which has sparked criticism over the limits of religious freedom and human rights, especially in a country where the majority of the population is Muslim.
