Algerian local elections reach critical phase
The article discusses the preparations for the upcoming local elections in Algeria, highlighting the significant challenges political parties face in submitting candidate lists that comply with the new electoral law, especially regarding integrity standards and anti-corruption measures. The process of submitting the lists saw the submission of 5,631 lists in total, including 5,371 party lists and 239 independent lists, with a total of 141,388 candidates. Candidates are encountering difficulties in meeting the integrity criteria, leading many honest individuals to abstain from running out of fear of disqualification and influenced by a prevailing lack of trust in the political environment. This has resulted in diminished interest and participation, stemming from a sense of futility regarding the elections and a lack of prospects for change. It is also expected that the election campaign will reveal the extent to which parties rely on their programs compared to the popularity of individual candidates, in order to boost voter confidence.
