Abbas sets elections for September 2027
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has announced a new date for holding simultaneous Palestinian presidential and legislative elections on September 11, 2027, after previous delays caused by political and security obstacles, particularly the challenges imposed by Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This decision follows a meeting of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Executive Committee, which agreed to adjust the election date in accordance with current circumstances and emphasized the need to ensure the safe and fair participation of Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza, with international oversight. Despite Israel's refusal to allow election committees access to certain areas, Abbas issued an official decree to organize the elections. The decision comes amidst deteriorating security and economic conditions, as well as Israeli obstructions, with the Palestinian leadership reaffirming its commitment to holding elections and supporting Palestinian unity and factions.
