Students in France and Europe demonstrated in protest against the worsening conditions of education and the increasing austerity measures. The students, originating from the suburbs of Paris, closed hundreds of schools for more than a week amid acts of violence and clashes with police. Calls to improve the conditions of educational institutions are growing. The United Nations expressed concern over the violence during the protests and called for ensuring their peacefulness and respecting the right to assemble. The German government responded to the protests cautiously, considering that France is making reform efforts. These protests are seen by some as part of political polarization ahead of the upcoming presidential elections, with accusations against the far-left party of inciting demonstrations. Similar protests occurred in Belgium, and the crisis has impacted European relations and balances.
