Egypt: Poverty debate ahead of summit
The article discusses the crisis caused by the absence of an official announcement regarding poverty rates in Egypt since the last official statistics in 2019-2020, which recorded a rate of 29.7%. There is a recurring question about the rise in poverty levels due to the ongoing economic crisis, with unofficial reports suggesting an increase to around 34%. Parliamentarians continue to pressure the government to disclose updated and reliable data, but the government prefers not to reveal such information out of concern for impacting its image concerning economic and political achievements. It is expected that partial and non-comprehensive results will be presented at the upcoming National Forum. Experts point out that the government relies on mitigation and targeted support policies to address the effects of poverty rather than releasing recent official figures, despite the importance of doing so for an accurate assessment of its economic and social performance.
