Southampton coach avoids penalty in spying scandal
Southampton player and coach Tonda Ikert narrowly avoided a lengthy suspension following the spying scandal he was involved in last season. He was handed a six-week suspension with pay and fined £28,000. He was found guilty of misconduct after the club admitted to spying on three rival clubs—Oxford, Ipswich, and Middlesbrough—in order to gather confidential information. Although the English Football Association proposed a three-month ban, the panel decided to reduce the punishment considering mitigating circumstances, due to Ikert’s genuine remorse. The scandal resulted in a four-point deduction from the club’s points total for the 2026-2027 season and prevented them from competing in the playoff final for promotion to the Premier League. It appears that the penalty has limited the possibility of Ikert’s dismissal, and the club has indicated that measures have been taken to prevent such violations from happening again.
