ISIS resurgence in Iraq likely
Iraq is experiencing an escalation in attacks by ISIS after the departure of the international coalition forces from the country. The organization carried out two successive attacks in Kirkuk in October 2026, resulting in the death of one soldier and injury to four others. During these attacks, they used motorcycles. Security forces are concerned about the organization exploiting the security vacuum, especially with the presence of dormant cells and geographical challenges in the dispersed areas between Kirkuk and Diyala, despite efforts to form joint forces to monitor these regions. It is believed that the organization no longer operates in the same way as before, but it benefits from sectarian hatreds and economic decline to recruit young people. There are warnings that its small cells remain active, and that the worsening security situation could further facilitate its resurgence if effective security measures are not taken.
