Beijing: Shvyonik beats Serena
Polish player Iga Swiatek defeated American player Iga Jović 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16 at the Beijing tournament, tying Serena Williams for the most wins in WTA 1000 events with a total of 148 victories. She is also closing in on second place on the all-time list for most wins, behind Aryna Sabalenka, who leads with 156. Swiatek managed to control the match despite Jović's resistance, as she was on a winning streak prior to this encounter. In the quarterfinals, she will face Belgian player Elise Mertens, who won a tough match against American Coco Gauff. It is expected that Swiatek will continue her pursuit of her second title of the season after winning in Toronto, as she aims to reach the semifinals for the first time in WTA 1000 events since 2021.
