Kirkuk police officer killed in terrorist attack
The terrorist organization ISIS attacked a Federal Police site southwest of Kirkuk, killing one police officer and injuring four others, using machine guns and snipers in what is considered the first such attack since the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq on September 30. Although the group was defeated in 2017, ISIS still maintains sleeper cells in the country, and Iraq is expected to face greater security challenges after the withdrawal, as Iraqi forces will assume responsibility for maintaining security and preventing the organization from regaining its strength.
