Turkey Faces Major Methane Leaks Before Climate Summit
An article addressing the issue of methane emissions from landfills in Turkey, particularly the Silivri landfill near Istanbul, which is considered one of the largest sources of methane emissions worldwide and exacerbates global warming. The emissions reach up to 7.4 tons per hour, with a climate impact equivalent to that of approximately 1.5 million SUVs. The article highlights that Turkey is preparing to host the COP 31 climate summit this November, with a focus on prioritizing methane emission reductions. It emphasizes that reducing these emissions is an effective way to achieve quick results in combating global warming, especially since methane stays in the atmosphere for a shorter period than carbon dioxide. Experts stress the importance of adopting strategies such as treating and recycling organic waste and achieving significant progress in efficiently capturing gas emissions from landfills. They also note that current efforts are influenced by political tensions, and that swift action is essential to protect the climate and mitigate the effects of global warming.
