Portugal probes US base use during Iran war
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Portugal has launched an investigation into the legality of the U.S. government's use of Lajes Air Base during the Iran war, following a complaint from the left-wing party. Portugal had allowed American flights to pass through the base last March, despite an agreement permitting Washington to use it during peacetime with Lisbon's approval in cases of aggression. The Portuguese Foreign Minister confirmed that the United States obtained permission based on assurances that the operations would be defensive and limited, raising controversy over how well the use of the base aligns with legal obligations.
