Washington calls for aid to Marshall Islands nuclear test victims
The High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on the United States to take further steps to address the legacy of nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands, where Washington conducted 67 nuclear tests between 1946 and 1958, including the "Castle Bravo" test on Bikini Island. The United Nations confirmed that the human toll has been severe and continues to this day, with rising cancer rates, displacement from contaminated areas, and social stigma. The Commission urged for compensation that includes healthcare and the declassification of information related to the nuclear legacy, as those affected suffer from long-term effects. The island residents called for an effective resolution to address the ongoing damages.
