Pro-Gaza protests suspend Ireland Austria match
The European Nations League match between Ireland and Austria was interrupted twice due to pro-Palestine protests, as fans threw tennis balls attached to Palestinian flags onto the field, and a man stormed onto the pitch waving a Palestinian flag, leading to a temporary suspension of the game. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, with supporters expressing their support for condemning the war in Gaza, and players wearing black armbands; there was also a lack of handshakes between the captains before kickoff. These events follow previous controversy surrounding Ireland's match against Israel, as Ireland decided to boycott the game on their own soil despite having played an earlier away fixture, in protest against Israeli policies in Gaza. Sources stated that around 200 protesters gathered outside the stadium, voicing their rejection of hosting matches linked to politics and efforts to whitewash genocide.
